Some say fear is what keeps us alive. Fear is the basic survival instinct that tells us to run, hide and protect ourselves from the beasts and monsters around us. It is that spine-chilling, bone-tingling sensation that creeps up on us in the face of the strange and unfamiliar. It certainly doesn’t sound like something to be excited about, but on one particular night each year, people celebrate the dark and sinister side of life. And on several occasions, people flock to movie houses or gather in front of the tv screen to watch horror movies and shows. To purposely scare our selves is both twisted and fascinating. Is it to prove our selves brave or otherwise? Is it a reminder that such things exist only on screen? Or is it a representation of our real world nightmares and darkest fantasies? Whatever the reason, our obsession with fear is what we all subtly share.

“House of Horrors” exhibits this dark fascination through adaptations of horror movie posters from the 1920’s to the 1970’s. These vintage illustrations were artfully created to entice the audience and add to the suspense of watching an hour and a half long clip of vampires, aliens, zombies and the like.

Artists Anjo Bolarda, Lala Gallardo, Yeo Kaa, Keb Cerda, Tano Panaligan, Felix Rosales, Rommel Celestpara, JR Urao, JP Cuizon, Bjorn Calleja, Whooop, Fabo, Rai Cruz, Randy Constantino, Mimi Salibio and Jessie Mondares created paintings inspired by the movie poster they chose with the freedom to incorporate their own personal style.

SHIT FOR BREAKFAST is when you wake up in the morning and you have pink eye. It's the fly in your whiskey glass when you have the last drop of alcohol. A bowl full of cereal and an empty carton of milk. 

Chichimonster and Notti, collectively, GODHAND reflects on the reality that is  life - the elephant in the room and the other side of the story. It's the day to day struggle that people constantly face but never quite talk about. The two collaborate in a series of paintings of satire and the mundane reflecting present day truths and inconveniences. 

The show also includes sculptures continuing the conversation of Chichimonster's 1% Luxury where the man made becomes dogmatic symbols repurposed and faced with the social convenience of accesibility  and the hype and how ridiculous it all is fully aware that everyhing done today will eventually be a future relic.  

Chichimonster continues and expounds more in SHIT FOR BREAKFAST with his signature photo - realistic portraits of walls , reflecting memories and things that irk his scubconcious expressed in the abstractions that he makes.

tokidoki's creative director Simone Legno at VOV this April 26, 8pm!

 

In a world where countless trends and designs are churned out every second, standing out is feat not everyone accomplishes, let alone achieving global, cult-like status. Safe to say, Tokidoki is one that has succeeded in the task.
 

With its buffet of wide-eyed, criminally cute characters and playful aesthetic it’s not hard to see why the brand has achieved such success. Since debuting in 2005, Tokidoki, with its colorful characters in hand, has amassed a cult following and has emerged as a sought-after global lifestyle brand. With partnerships with big brands such as Hello Kitty, Karl Lagerfeld, LeSportsac, Barbie, Onitsuka Tiger, and Marvel, just to name a few, Tokidoki has risen to become a big brand in itself.
 

Tokidoki, which translates as “sometimes” in Japanese is the brainchild of Italian artist Simone Legno, with his partners Pooneh Mohajer and Ivan Arnold.
 

Simone Legno, the creative director of the brand, has had art as his companion since he was a child. It is with a box of pencils in one hand and a hunger for creating in the other that the beginnings of Tokidoki would eventually perpetuate.
 

Continuing his childhood passion and sharing it to the world, Simone has been a sought-after speaker around the world at museums, universities and conferences.
 

He will be showcasing his works in the Vinyl on Vinyl gallery in the Collective, Makati. Vinyl on Vinyl has had its fair share of international artists exhibiting in their space, from Jon Burgerman to Tara Mchperson, and Arkiv Vilmansa to, more recently, Gary Baseman.

Super Swimming Pool

It is safe to say that most, if not every fresh, wide-eyed, young artist who has wobbled their way into the belly of the creative beast has come across this statement at least once in their artistic journey: “Good artists copy, great artists steal.” It is an irony to cuff the statement with creativity, yet it is used to the point of cliché. We’ve become a culture of imitation, a sea of mirrors that reflect the next best thing.

Dive into the pool of the non-originals and the lifestyle of the something borrowed. We are at the age of copy and paste. An age where it is believed that self-preservation leads to stagnation and the stolen perspective becomes its own work of art.

Super Swimming Pool is a reflection of the art world where everything is inspired by something else and the only thing original is the vandalism of another. It is an exhibit that mimics the act of taking something that exists and making it your own, at the cost of swimming at the shallow waters of strained innovation and originality.

In true Repro Pop (Reproduction of Pop) fashion, Kris Abrigo dives head first into a pool of borrowed ideas and reoccurring techniques, and gives the place a much-needed taste of their own medicine. Yet unlike still waters, Kris tampers with the stillness and creates a calculated turbulence. Warning: a slight distortion may occur.

Kris Abrigo is a sculptor, a painter and an illustrator, just to name a few. He studied in Fine Arts and majored in Visual Communication in UP Diliman. He has won a national sculpture competition and has had a handful of group shows under his belt.  His work has gained much visibility over the years from doing street art for a year and doing illustrations and set designs for magazines, to creating murals for commercial and residential spaces, and crafting design sculptures for a furniture shop.
